Astros Add Vending Machines to Minute Maid Park

HOUSTON, June 1, 2021 — Minute Maid Park has added another low-contact option for hungry Houston Astros fans in the form of smart vending machines. Eleven Mars-branded machines can be found throughout the ballpark starting June 1, when the Astros host the Boston Red Sox.

The distinctly yellow M&M’s machines will offer fan favorites such as Peanut M&M’s, Snickers and Twix. These smart kiosks will also have KIND bars and Combos for fans looking for a less sweet snack option. Currently, six machines can be found on the Main Concourse at Sections 105 (near Union Station Entrance and St. Arnold’s Bar), 118 (near the Insperity Club), 120 (next to Love Street Bar) and 150 (next to Texas Legends Grill), with one in Hall of Fame Alley and one just inside Center Field Gate. There are also four machines on the Upper Concourse at Sections 305 (next to Karbach Corner), 315, 324 and 334 (near the Michelob Ultra Club). Additionally, one lone machine can be found outside at the Right Field Gate entrance.

Payment options include Apply Pay, Google Pay, all major credit cards and debit cards. While each machine’s default is English, as an added convenience for visitors to the ballpark, the language can be easily switched to Spanish. For fans preferring to pay in cash, take advantage of one of the other low-contact installations the Astros have made available, reverse ATMs. Deposit money and receive an Astros-branded debit card in return, leftover funds can be used anywhere Mastercard is accepted. Reverse ATMs can be found near the Center Field Gate and sections 108, 218 and 315. 

BlueBox, the Houston-based startup delivering these autonomous retail machines, offers brands a digital out-of-home (DOOH) media and point of sale (POS) platform, while offering baseball fans snacks and drinks in convenient locations. Aramark, the Astros’ food and beverage provider, is also an operator partner of BlueBox and will service the machines in Minute Maid Park.

These UX-focused units of the Mars’ vending fleet have been placed in Minute Maid Park to optimize customer convenience and give brands exposure opportunities. Combined with artificial intelligence and IoT, the BlueBox machines offer brands an activation platform that boasts a 50″ digital screen to captivate potential customers with high-definition videos. 

With this latest installation at Minute Maid Park, BlueBox continues to expand their Houston footprint and is expected to launch in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex this summer. More than 500 machines are expected to be brought online throughout the next six months in both private and public sectors across the state of Texas. 

In partnership with Mars and Aramark, a soft launch of BlueBox’s smart convenience machines were placed around Austin, Texas, in March 2021.
